Look What We Are Teaching At Public Schools
Pakistan’s public schools, which educate some 70 percent of the student population….
Prescribed textbooks for
Classes 4 and 5, attended by children aged 8 to 10, are bursting with anti-Hindu and anti-Sikh
themes. By Class 6, when students are typically 10 to 12 years old, anti-Christian, anti-British and anti-European indoctrination begins. Children are taught that the “Christians and Europeans were not happy to see the Muslims flourishing in life.”31 Anti-Jewish postulations are introduced in Class 7. In Classes 9-10, when students are typically 13 to 16 years old, the ‘importance of Jihad’ is cultivated.

Sad and shocking. I’m from India and I can assert that in our text books I never saw anything like this in the reverse direction. Sure, there are still some “national myths”, but not such hate mongering.
Comment by Siddharth — February 15, 2010 @ 8:17 pm |
@Siddarth: its sad and shocking but its happening on both sides of border. Anyone writing on curriculum on either country can’t avoid a certain degree of despondency. I got chance to read two books by Indian authors regarding the matter, Prejudice and Pride by Krishna Kumar and Veronique Benei’s Manufacturing Citizenship. A nice insight into curriculum used in India. Both countries have inherited same problems
Comment by Riaz ul Hassan — February 15, 2010 @ 10:45 pm |
@Riaz,
I agree.. every country in the world has biases in text books. I was discussing history with an American friend and I was shocked to see how much their history is also distorted vis a vis the prevalent consensus.
India, like most other countries, is no exception to this nonsense. There are some outrageous things written in some state level textbooks in states ruled by BJP for example.
But even in such state-education-board syllabi, to the best of my knowledge (I haven’t read the books you mentioned though), these falsified parts generally show strong nationalistic positioning that glorify Indian civilization. But I still maintain that I do not know of any parts that demonize the other side or any minority religions in India.
At the central level, the syllabus is more neutral (I’m talking about relative terms and not absolute). I never recall anything that showed that, for example, Pakistan was aggressive towards those who wanted to move to India, vis a vis Indians towards those who chose to move to Pakistan. The central board of education in India (which sets the syllabus) is more or less free from interference in day to day matters.
I think the Pakistani syllabus got heavily influenced at the unfortunate times of the dictatorships. Of course, I admit I do not know much about this. India, luckily, has avoided this so far. (Again, my views are constrained due to a possible lack of knowledge, so do excuse me for that).
Anyway, thanks for the book references. Will try to read if I can find them. Cheers!

what do you want to be taught, that hindus were at their best wen Pakistan came in to being. You want us to teach love and care towards the deceiving Jews and Christians. Y?????
biased text book these ppl say i say it is the truth .
i have looked into every detail that you mentioned and sorry to say whatever is written in them is the truth. i agree that We the Muslims have done a lot of bad things and to be honest we do own up to them. However the rest just tend to pretend they did not do it or they were unaware of the action or it was us who did
that however is devious
i do not know wat makes u use the word liberal Islam and liberal Pakistan
it cnt be that way
Comment by Alyzay — February 18, 2010 @ 6:48 am |
This is called misinformation, disinformation, and intellectual dishonesty.
Most of the text books in Pakistan need to be reviewed and revised for flushing away the hatred and nonsense.
Such text books are also responsible for the decline of Pakistan’s social and political fabric.

Well I do not if all the above is truth or not but truth should be told even if it criticizes. As you quoted Musharraf said that muslims ruled for centuries due to knowledge, well that is true! Even the westerners agree with that. You also quoted killing of sikhs. Its a world known fact that killing by sikhs was down because they were pissed because they had not been given a portion of land. Its history and history should be taught. Yes muslims also did bad things and they should be included. The problem is not including history or something, it is how we manipulate history.

Seeing some of the comments above by Pakistanis, obviously the brainwashing discussed in the article has been effective.
Comment by Atheist Indian — December 21, 2010 @ 3:40 am |
History is never perfect; you cannot expect a mirror image of events that took place in the past; history is only indicatory e.g. the partition resulted in bloodshed, lives on both sides were lost, i m not sure what kind of subtle poison is being poured into the ears of poor indian students. But i cannot trust whatever they are teaching is whole truth. Peace.
Comment by Muhammad Farooq — December 28, 2010 @ 7:52 pm |
Unfortunate I am disturbed to hear that. Any way my sympathy is with pakistan…I hope one or other day they may get out of this enmity with mankind( I mean with non muslims)
